Ship’s Purse Guest — Support
Getting started
What does Ship’s Purse Guest do?
It shows you the charter kitty the bookkeeper keeps in Rainbow’s End Ship’s Purse: the money paid in, every expense, the receipts, the settlement, and where you stand. You read it; only the bookkeeper enters anything.
Where do I get the code?
From the bookkeeper. When they switch sharing on in Ship’s Purse, the Share screen shows an eight-character code in two groups of four, like RB7K-4MQX. Type it on the first screen and tap Open the purse.
Do I need an account or iCloud?
No. Reading a purse needs no account and no iCloud sign-in. It needs a signal the first time you open it.
Can I try it without a code?
Yes. Tap the Sample purse on the first screen, or type DEMO-DEMO. It is a worked week in the Exumas with seven people, kept on your phone, and needs no network.
Joining
It says “No purse is shared under that code.”
Either a character is wrong or the bookkeeper has sharing switched off. Codes use the digits 2 to 9 and the letters A to Z without I or O, so there is no 0, 1, I or O to mistake. Check the code with the bookkeeper.
It says the code does not open the purse.
A record exists under that code, but the code does not unlock it, which almost always means one character is misread. Check it with the bookkeeper.
It says to update the app.
The bookkeeper’s Ship’s Purse is newer than this app. Update Ship’s Purse Guest from the App Store.
Do I have to type the code every time?
No. Every purse you open is listed on the first screen under Purses on this phone, newest first. Tap one to open it. Forget this purse removes it from your phone; the purse itself is untouched.
Reading the purse
How do I see my own figures?
Open the purse and tap your name under Which one are you? The card shows your share due, what you have paid in, what you paid for the boat that has not been paid back, what you still owe on the rounds, and what would change hands if the purse settled now. Your name is remembered on this phone only.
What is a share due?
Everything the bookkeeper has asked of you, across all rounds, at your share. A full share is 1; a child at half board might be 0.5. The bookkeeper sets the shares.
I paid for fuel on my own card. Where is it?
The bookkeeper enters it as an expense you paid. It shows on your card as paid for the boat until you are paid back in cash. If it was offset instead, it counts against your next round, and anything left over comes back at settlement.
What are the envelope and the float?
The envelope is the cash. The float is money sent another way, such as Venmo or Zelle, held in the bookkeeper’s own account for the purse. Together they are what the purse holds.
Some lines are crossed out.
Those are struck entries. The bookkeeper never edits or deletes a line; a mistake is struck with a reason, and every figure is worked out as if it had never been entered.
How do I see a receipt?
Tap Receipt › under the expense. The photo is fetched when you tap. If it says the photo is not shared yet, the bookkeeper’s phone has not had signal since the photo was taken; try again later.
How does settling work?
Tap Settlement. Your line comes first. Everyone settles with the purse, never with another guest: whoever paid in less than their share due owes the purse, whoever paid in more or paid for the boat is owed the difference, and what is left goes back in proportion to each share due. Each person gets one line, marked paid as the bookkeeper records it.
Keeping up
How current is what I see?
As current as the bookkeeper’s last update. The line under the purse name says when that was. Your phone looks for changes when you open the purse, when you come back to the app, and every minute while it is open. Check for changes looks at once.
Can I read it with no signal?
Yes, from the last copy your phone saw. The line under the purse name says how old it is. Receipt photos you have not opened before need a signal.
It says “No longer shared.”
The bookkeeper switched sharing off, chose a new code, or deleted the purse. Your last copy stays readable, including the settlement. If they chose a new code, ask for it.
Can I change anything?
No. Payments, expenses, shares and counts are entered by the bookkeeper in Ship’s Purse. Tell them, and the change shows here after their next update.
Does it work on the iPad?
Yes, on iPhone and iPad.
