Privacy Policy
Ship’s Purse collects nothing. Your purses stay on your device. A purse leaves it only when you share it with your crew, sealed with a code nobody else holds, when you export it yourself, or when you send an expense to another of our apps.
What stays on your device
Everything you enter is stored in the app’s own storage on your device: each purse’s name, dates and currency, the names and shares of the people aboard, the budget, and every entry in the ledger with its amounts, notes and payment method. The app has no account and no server of ours.
Deleting a purse or the app deletes this data from the device. A backup of your device may include the app’s data like any other app’s. Backups are managed by Apple, and we never see them.
Receipt photos
When you tap Take a photo or Choose a photo on an expense, the app asks for the camera or your photo library, only at that tap. The photo is copied into the app’s own folder on the device, without its location data. Your original is not changed. Deleting the purse deletes its photos.
Sharing with your crew
Sharing is off until you switch it on. When it is on, the app sends the purse, including people’s names, amounts, notes and receipt photos, to Apple’s iCloud, in the public storage of the app’s own container. Before it leaves your device, the purse is encrypted with a key made from an eight-character code, and it is stored under a name computed from that code. Anyone you give the code to can read it in Ship’s Purse Guest. We never see the code and do not read the purse.
The code is the only key, and it is short enough to type. Someone with technical skill who obtained the stored purse could try every possible code until one opened it. Give the code only to your crew, and tap New code when the crew changes.
Sharing needs your device signed into iCloud. Switching sharing off, choosing a new code, or deleting the purse removes it from iCloud if your phone has a signal at the time. The stored purse is governed by Apple’s iCloud terms.
Exporting
Export builds a PDF statement, a spreadsheet or a backup file on your device and hands it to the share sheet when you tap. Where it goes from there is your choice each time. We never see it.
Expenses shared with Logbook and Handover
From version 1.0.1, an expense can pass between Ship’s Purse and our apps Rainbow’s End Logbook and Rainbow’s End Handover, so it is entered once. Each expense travels as a small file, a “card”: its category, amount, date, who was paid, where, a note, the boat’s name and the voyage’s dates, and any receipt photo that came with it.
On one device, a card goes into a folder that only our own apps can read, on that device. To another person’s phone, it goes as a file through the system’s share sheet (AirDrop, Messages, Files), to wherever you send it. Neither way uses a server of ours, and nothing goes over the internet unless you choose Messages or Mail. A card sent to Ship’s Purse is only offered; nothing is added until you tap Add or Link.
What the app does not do
No analytics, no advertising, no tracking, and no third-party data collection. The app does not read your location or your contacts. It makes no network requests unless sharing is on.
Purchases
Buying the app is handled by the App Store. We receive no payment details and no personal information from your purchase.
Children
The app collects no data from anyone, children included.
Changes to this policy
If a future version changes any of the above, this policy will be updated first, with the effective date revised and the change described here.
September 17, 2026: first version.
September 26, 2026: added “Expenses shared with Logbook and Handover” for version 1.0.1, and the words “or when you send an expense to another of our apps” in the short version.
October 4, 2026: corrected “Sharing with your crew.” It had said nobody without the code could read a shared purse, including us. That is not so: the code is short, and someone with technical skill who obtained the stored purse could try every code. The section now says what we do, states that limit, and says a shared purse is removed from iCloud only if your phone has a signal at the time.
